Some industrial sites are known as COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) sites. This is because they hold substances which have a small risk of causing hazardous chemical releases, fires or explosions. Some COMAH sites have a Public Information Zone (PIZ) around them. This is the area where residents and businesses are given safety information, just in case they are impacted by an incident at this site.
People who live or work in this zone are:
Informed about the site and its risks
Given clear instructions on what to do in an emergency
Provided with updates or leaflets (often called public information leaflets)
